Provenance

A tropical, Brazilian native of the prayer plant Marantaceae family, known for practicing nyctinasty—the Calathea Beauty Star rhythmically closes and opens, raising its leaves upward nightly, like folded hands in prayer lowered at day's break. Though commonly sold as a Calathea, botanists reclassified the Beauty Star and many of its relatives into the Goeppertia genus. 

Calathea and other prayer plants endow the home with what can only be described as a subtle, musical quality—as they quickly move their leaves during the transition from night to day and day to night, responding sedulously to shifting light. Together, large groupings of prayer plants produce a soft, yet unmistakable rustling sound.

Care

• The Light: Medium to bright, indirect sunlight. Please avoid direct rays, which can fade its intricate leaf patterns and burn the foliage.
• The Water: Please keep the soil evenly moist, avoiding sogginess. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, using filtered or rainwater if possible. The Calathea Beauty Star is sensitive to the fluoride and heavy minerals found in standard tap water, which easily cause its distinct leaf tips to turn brown and crispy.
• The Cow Pot: A zero-waste, fully biodegradable planter molded from dehydrated, odorless dairy manure. Rather than disturbing the delicate root system by unpotting, simply settle the entire organic vessel directly into a five- or six-inch permanent planter. This seamlessly bypasses transplant shock while allowing the expanding roots to naturally digest the vessel's organic nitrogen.
