Hoya Lisa Watercolor-Variegated Wax Vine | Eco Cow Pot | 4 in. (Hoya australis Lisa)

The Hoya Lisa. Broad, rounded, delightfully rubbery leaves that, to the eye, appear almost painted in an intricate watercolor variegation of creamy golds and greens. The Hoya Lisa's vines, pushing out new seasonal growth, cascade downward like an emerald waterfall and emerge a breathtakingly deep shade of burgundy-rose before maturing into their bright, multi-tone.

Provenance

Hoya australis 'Lisa' is a hand-cultivated Hoya variety derived from its rugged epiphyte ancestors native to the tropical rainforest margins, dense woodland canopies, and rocky coastlines of northern and eastern Australia. In classical tropical botany, the Hoya Lisa is known for its spectacular, umbrella-like clusters of star-shaped, fragrant porcelain blossoms.

Indigenous islanders traditionally used Hoya australis Lisa's thick, fleshy leaves to prepare hypotensive remedies and soothing poultices applied to severe body rashes, burns, and localized muscle inflammation. Peer-reviewed laboratory testing has isolated sizeable concentrations of active chlorogenic acid, iso-chlorogenic acid, and phenolic depsides running through the greater Hoya genus' leaf tissue, compounds shown to deliver potent cellular antioxidant and antibacterial defense.

Chemical tracking of the Lisa's protective tissues, naturally rich in thick, milky-white organic latex sap, confirm that its "milkiness" is driven by lipoid particles suspended in an aqueous serum, full of triterpenoids like lupeol and β-amyrin. These bitter triterpenes serve as the Hoya Lisa's brilliant, defense mechanism against external pathogens and herbivores, resiliently sealing cell walls. Toxicology reviews curiously demonstrated that the Hoya Lisa actually lacks the dangerous proteolytic enzymes (ficin) found in toxic rubber trees that similarly produce natural organic latex in their sap, concluding the Hoya Lisa's sap to be uniquely safe for the skin of many wild mammals.

Care

  • The Light: Bright, indirect sunlight. Please avoid direct, afternoon sun to preserve the vivid cream and rose variegation.
  • The Water: When dry to a depth of two inches, water thoroughly until there is drainage from the base.
  • The Cow Pot: A zero-waste, fully biodegradable planter molded from dehydrated, odorless dairy manure. Rather than disturbing the delicate root system by unpotting, simply settle the entire organic vessel directly into a five- or six-inch permanent planter. This seamlessly bypasses transplant shock while allowing the expanding roots to naturally digest the vessel's organic nitrogen.

Pet Safety

ASPCA listed the Hoya wax plant genus as non-toxic to cats and dogs.
