Young Cornelia, Future Mother of the Gracchi | Crystal and Pearl Embellished Bodice Tiered Plissé Dress in Peach Blossom Astilbe

Cornelia Africana (c. 190 – c. 100 BC), daughter of Scipio Africanus and mother of the Gracchi brothers, has been celebrated as one of the most cultured, virtuous, and influential women of ancient Rome. Cornelia was considered the archetypal Roman matrona (a respected, married Roman woman) because of how she embodied the traditional civic virtues cherished by the Roman Republic.

As recorded by the historian Valerius Maximus, it is said a wealthy patrician guest was flaunting her expensive jewelry and requested to see Cornelia’s collection. Cornelia delayed the conversation until her sons, Tiberius and Gaius, walked through the door. She pointed to them and delivered this famous line: “Haec ornamenta sunt mea," meaning "These are my jewels" or "Here are my treasures," demonstrating her discernment.

Cornelia nurtured future leaders over fixating on material wealth. Here's to the young Cornelia in you.
